How to achieve the perfect Cat Eye with liquid eyeliner
Sultry, sexy and mysterious, Cat Eye eyeliner has continuously made a comeback on the makeup scene since the 1950s because of its elegance and Hollywood glamour-esque feel, but it really isn’t the easiest eye makeup look to achieve. Have you been smudging your way to mastering the Cat Eye? Follow the simple steps below and kiss goodbye to uneven flicks in a jiffy!
Selecting your tools
Long lasting liquid eyeliner with a fine tipped applicator is your best friend when it comes to perfecting your Cat Eye as a fine tip will really help to create a line with precision. If your hands just aren’t steady enough for fine lines, opt for an eyeliner pen, which generally has a thicker applicator, which makes it easier to create a straight line.
Hold your head up high
Tilting your chin up slightly will help to give you more access to your eyelids as you’ll naturally close your lids without squinting, which brings me on to my next point…
Don’t squint!
If you squint, or overly stretch your eyelids, you’ll only end up with an uneven line once you relax the skin on lids, so try to refrain from doing so. Instead pinch your lids ever so slightly and hold your chin up slightly to close and lengthen your lids.
Keep your hands steady
Everyone has their own way of steadying themselves when applying liquid liner, but my advice is to apply your liner with your face close up to a mirror, keeping your hand steady by balancing your elbow on a flat surface.
Set a base
You want your eyeliner to last the trials and tribulations of the day, right? Applying a primer will help to extend the wear of your eyeliner, so that it lasts all day long. For a classic Hollywood finish, apply a nude eyeshadow after your primer, but it’s perfectly okay if you choose to skip the eyeshadow.
Start with a pencil
If you’re really unsure of how steady a line you can draw in liquid eyeliner, start off by drawing an outline with a pencil liner. Draw an outline of where you want your flick to be before filling in your lines as this will help to guide you. Start at the inner corner of your eye and draw your line outwards. If you’re confident enough to go the whole way with your liquid liner, follow the steps above with stencilling in your Cat Eye with a pencil liner.
The perfect finish
Draw over your penciled line and fill it in with a liquid liner. You might want to keep dampened cotton buds (q-tips) to hand in case you make any mistakes.
And finally, a few tips…
Apply a thicker line for a more dramatic look
Draw a line on your lower lids with a pencil liner for an Oriental look
Finish off with false lashes to make your eyes pop
Practice makes perfect, so don’t worry if you don’t get it right the first time round!
