If there’s one part of the face that has received considerable attention in the cosmetics stakes this season, it would have to be the lips. Everyone’s obsessed with big lips and bloggers the world over are posting tips and tricks on how to make lips look fuller. One effective trick to achieve fuller lips without having to go under the knife, or use lip plumping kits is to create an ombré lip effect. Here’s how it’s done!
Ombré basically means two colours that gradually blend into each other, as with the ombré hair trend of having darker roots and lighter tips. But, ombré isn’t a term that’s exclusively applied to this particular hair colouring technique, it’s also a hot new lip colour trend that has taken the beauty scene by storm.
The trick to successfully pulling off an ombré lip is to get colourful and be bold, especially with deep shades of red. Here’s what you’ll need:
- A concealer
- A dark lipliner
- A lighter shade of lipstick in the same colour, or a close match colour
- An application brush
You’ll want to start off by applying concealer to your lips in order to conceal your own natural lip colour and to create a blank canvas for your ombré effect.
Using a dark lipliner, carefully line the corner of your lips, but don’t fill in your entire lips with this colour. You can create the illusion of thicker, fuller lips by carefully extending the line outside of your natural line at the top and bottom of your lips, but you’ll want to be careful not to make it look too obvious.
Next, apply your lighter colour to the centre of your lips and try not to smear your lipstick, or blend the two colours by not rubbing your lips together. In order to create the faded effect you’ll want to take your application brush and gently blend your lighter colour outwards in stages, as well as going over your darker line and blending this into your lighter lip colour bit by bit. Easy does it.
Play around with different colours and finishes, from matte to sheen and shimmer for different effects. You can even spice things up a little by applying two different colours together, such as pink and purple as it’s not entirely necessary to stick to one colour in different shades. I’d suggest a violet liner blended into a plum red lipstick for a dramatic evening lip, or a warm pink liner with a pastel pink lipstick for a more playful daytime look, but the combinations are limitless!
